One of the most abysmal wagering mistakes I've ever seen on Jeopardy. Did he just miscalculate that he was in reach of 1st place? Seriously, people need to read a guide before they come on Jeopardy so they don't lose $20,000+ like this.

@Black Guy of the south , But the answer was "Django Unchained". ("12Yrs a Slave" was actually 2013, Best Picture of.) Well, the category accurately described the subject of the CLUE. It didn't mean the RESPONSE had to be "Who is Mister Django".

I saw that betting strategy backfire spectacularly once. Guy had exactly twice as much as the nearest competitor and bet $1, the opponent got the question right and doubled their score. The champ lost by a dollar. So for the upside of 1/10000th of his money, he risked losing and paid for it. Math is important folks, don't be "that guy who lost $10K because he bet $1"

Did contestant one and three remotely think about the title of the category? Even if you don't know the answer (I didn't but was able to guess it) you had to know that the movie name would contain the name of a character in the title. Heck John Wick would have been a better guess than 12 years a slave based simply because of the title of the category.

@My Buccaneers Did it 2x champs They didn't ask for the characters name. They asked for the movie in which the title character is referenced. Doesn't have to be by name just "referenced". The title character in The Aviator is Howard Hughes. ...lol

@HonestEagle98 Different time, ENTIRELY different type of TV game show. I think the ideal host of Jeopardy should be intellectually oriented, but still stimulating/engaging (esp in interacting with the daily players), and interject some humor where appropriate as well. Alex Trebek had all that in spades, that's why he was perfect for the show (and integral to its success) for so many years.

    • HonestEagle98

      Power_struggle55

@Josh DeFamio 12 years a slave doesnt refer to him (well it does) as it summerizes the story. if it was based on him would be called like The slave...or something

    • Josh DeFamio
      Josh DeFamio

I thought that at first, too. But, technically, the main character would be the title character since he is the slave referred to in the title. Title character doesn't necessarily mean the name, just that there's a word (or words) in the title that specifically refer to a certain character. For example, in 'My Cousin Vinny,' both Joe Pesci (Vinny) and Ralph Macchio (My) play a title character.

Horrible wager by 2nd place, unless his goal was to avoid being in 3rd place. Leader had two options: $0 or $1. The only way 2nd place wins or ties in either of those scenarios is by betting it all. I would say that even the leader should've bet $0. Force 2nd place to answer final jeopardy AND the tiebreaker correctly to win. By betting $1 you've giving 2nd place a chance to win by just being correct on final jeopardy and betting correctly (everything). UNLESS you're beyond-confident with the category.

    • Jose Alvarez
      Jose Alvarez

@Michael Hunt Sorry, this is completely incorrect. Try again.

    • Michael Hunt
      Michael Hunt

And Roey Hadar would have won if he had bet the dollar. ilcomp.info/home/uaVrrIF7mcOqm8c/wyd-w.html And he missed out on a guaranteed win. Missing out on a mere chance at a tiebreaker is not nearly as bad. And, in any event, I am making a general point that, given reasonable category confidence, betting a dollar gives the leader a higher percentage chance of winning, which is clear for the reasons I stated.

    • Jose Alvarez
      Jose Alvarez

@Michael Hunt FYI - if 2nd place had bet correctly, then the leader would have lost using your strategy.

    • Michael Hunt
      Michael Hunt

I cannot agree. I believe the leader should bet $1 if he/she has even moderate confidence in the category (and perhaps more if he/she loves the category). If 2nd gets FJ right, the chances of 1st also getting it right are about 60%. But, if the leader bets $0, he/she must face a tiebreaker anytime second bets it all, even if he/she gets it right. If the leader feels very unconfident in the category AND has a huge buzzer advantage (and that is not a given, depending on how many questions second place missed, especially if daily doubles were missed) it may be reasonable to take that chance. Otherwise, it is best to go play to win in FJ.

  • jimthar17

It always amuses me how on Jeopardy the contestants always purposely avoid the movie oriented categories and immediately go for the "harder" categories in an attempt to appear smarter. Almost as if they're above watching movies or something. "Uh yeah, I'll have 1400's Baroque poetry architecture musical forms of biological protozoan history for sixteen hundred please." I mean, two out of three got the question wrong here. They didn't even understand the category.

Not necessarily. If you have heard of the film, and know that Jamie Fox plays a slave, you could guess Django Unchained, and just hope it took place right before the civil war, and assume Django must be the name of the character, all the other stuff you don't need to know. Why does Anderson Cooper sound like William shatner in this? He's a professional anchor for a major news outlet, You think he would be able to read out the questions in a less stilted way.

The word "dollar" must be plural. 1:10 1:13

It's an archaic way of saying it, but some people use the singular any time a number ends in a 1.

Love Anderson Cooper. Too bad he's way too busy to take this on as a permanent gig.

That has to be one of the easiest questions for final jeopardy.

@Special K12 They got it wrong because Tarantino is an acquired taste, not quite mainstream.

    • Special K12

@SpreadingtheMuse they got it wrong because they clearly steer clear of race centered movies. 12 Years a Slave has ONLY Americans at its center

@Joel Bizzell Questions like this have nothing to do with intelligence. Its random chance. There's nothing "intelligent" about randomly choosing to watch a Tarantino movie instead of a Spielberg movie on any particular weekend. If Tarantino isnt on someones radar, then the question is dead in the water.

12 Years A Slave came out a year later. :) Also, you can just bet 1 or even no dollars? DANG! Why don't more people do that?

    • aalikane
      aalikane

Because unless it's a runaway there isn't a lot of incentive to bet 0 dollars. If you're in 1st, and the others are close behind, you bet large to try and overcome their bets. If you're in second place, you have zero incentive to bet 0, because then you're relying on the 1st place contestant to BOTH miss the question AND bet enough to fall under your current mark. If you're in 3rd, now suddenly you're waiting on TWO contestants to miss and overbet.. The only time betting low is a wise idea is if it's a runaway or you dont know the topic at all.
